GO match racing - sailing as a PE or outdoor education option in schools

Scots College win 2008 College Sport Wellington Match Racing Champs

Coaching for Wellington secondary school sailing teams in 2009

GO match racing - sailing as a PE or outdoor education option in schools

The Port Nicholson Yachting Trust, with the support of the New Zealand Community Trust, proudly brings to you the College Sport Wellington GO match racing days. The aim of the days are to provide an opportunity for Wellington secondary school students to experience the thrills of match racing on Wellington Harbour.

During term 4 2008 Wellington Secondary schools have the opportunity to integrate “GO match racing” into their physical and outdoor education programmes for year 9 and 10 students while seniors are at exams. The Port Nicholson Yachting Trust is making available eight 3 hr sessions for secondary schools in the greater Wellington area.

During the “GO match racing” sessions students will …
   be introduced to match racing
   be briefed on safety issues
experience sailing on a keelboat on Wellington harbour
participate in a match racing competition

The sessions are hosted by the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club Sailing Academy in Oriental Bay. The briefing and introductory sessions are held in the sailing academy seminar rooms. All safety and wet weather equipment is supplied by the sailing academy. Six keel boats are available for each session with each keelboat having a trained instructor or match racing coach as skipper. The maximum number of students able to participate be sailing at one time is 28. Teachers and additional students are able to go afloat in a support craft.

Schools can choose to book a session on any day in term three or four 2009. The sailing academy is flexible as to the time of day that you choose to go sailing.

There is a charge of $15 per student for the “GO match racing” sessions.

Scots College win 2008 College Sport Wellington Match Racing Champs

10.09.08. Tim Coltman, Elliot Andrew and Mackenzie Taylor from Scots College are the 2008 College Sport Wellington Secondary Schools match racing champions.

Racing in the 2008 College Sport Wellington Secondary Schools Match Racing Championships began on Thursday last week with seven teams from five colleges lined up on the start line. Eight flights were completed before the Southerly rolled in and the conditions got too cold and windy. Racing was postponed again on Friday as the southerly was just too strong and cold.

On Saturday the teams were back on the water to complete the round robin phase of the championship. After another eight flights the semi finalists were identified with two teams from
Rongotai College lined up against two teams form Scots College . Both Scots College teams proved too strong for their semi finals opponent and won their matches 2-0.

The finals were a different story. Tim Coltman, Elliot Andrew and Mackenzie Taylor jumped to an early 2-0 advantage in the best of five finals. Not to be out done Chris Staub, Tom Spooner and James Kane fought back hard and won the next two matches. The pre start in the final race was intense with both teams trying to get a penalty on the other. In the end Coltman managed to lock Staub out at the start boat giving him enough of an advantage to sail away with the match and the 2008 title.

The sail off for third and fourth was equally as fierce between the two Rongotai teams. In the end Simon McVeagh, Jono Sunby, Jonathan Steven and William McVeagh narrowly defeated their school mates James Hakes, Alex Begg and William Eastman to take out third place.

Coaching for Wellington secondary school sailing teams

During term two and three 2009 Wellington secondary schools can receive coaching support for their match racing teams thanks to a partnership between the Port Nicholson Yachting Trust and College Sport Wellington. Boy’s teams consist of three students, while girl’s teams can have four students. Mixed gender teams of three students can also enter. Each team must have at least one member who has experience of sailing and at least one member who is new to sailing.

The programme provides access to …
a fleet of four match racing keelboats
   a coach boat
   coaching equipment
   coaches

Each team is provided with up to eight, 2.5 hour coaching sessions facilitated by a sailing academy match racing coach. Coaching takes place after school during term two, and during the first six weeks of term three. Schools can involve their own coaching or support people in the programme but aren’t  disadvantaged if they do not have these people involved.

Coaching is based out of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club sailing academy. The yachts leave from Chaffer’s Marina and sailing is generally on the inner harbour off Frank Kitts Park or off Oriental Bay.

The programme caters for up to 12 teams. Schools can include more than one team in the programme if they choose. A regatta is held during winter sports week to determine the College Sport Wellington match racing champions. The regatta is hosted by the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club.

There is a charge of $75 per sailor for the secondary schools match racing coaching programme. This cost includes all coaching sessions and entry into the College Sport Wellington match racing championships.
