 08-09 Wellington Under 21 and Women's Match Racing squads announced

The Port Nicholson Yachting Trust is proud to announce the selection of the Wellington Under 21 Match Racing Squad and the Wellington Women's Match Racing Squad. Trust chairman Murray Bridge says "we are pleased to be expanding our support of match racing in Wellington with the establishment of these two new squads. From May 08 to April 09 we will provide coaching and logistical support to the squads so that they can achieve their best on the Trans Tasman circuit. We wish the sailors the best of luck."

 CentrePort Wellington International Youth Match Racing Champs   


  

  
Three youth scheme teams competed in the CentrePort champs in Wellington in early March. The wind played tricks with the regatta meaning only one round robin could be completed. All scheme teams sailed very well indicating that the strength of youth match racing in the Wellington region is on the improve. more

Josh Junior, Matthew Steven and Chris Jones finished second. 

Rowan Swanson, Jonathan Clough and Matthew Clough finished seventh. 

Chris Staub, Tom Connal and James Hakes finished eighth. 

 Hardy Cup   

Josh Junior, Matthew Steven and Chris Jones competed in the Hardy Cup Under 25 ISAF grade 3 match racing champs in mid February 08. The team sailed outstandingly to finish in fifth place, and very near to making the semis. A complicated tie break was needed to split them from two other teams for the 3rd and 4th spots in the final. more

 National Bank International Match Racing Champs   

Chris Staub, Simon McVeagh and James Hakes competed in the National Bank International Youth Match Racing Champs in Auckland in late January 08 This young and new combination improved throughout the regatta finishing 8th in a very competitive fleet. more

 Harken Cup International Match Racing Champs   

Josh Junior, Matthew Steven, Adam Middleton and Chris Jones competed in the Harken Cup in Sydney in mid December 07. The team sailed very well to finish in third place in a very high caliber fleet. This was the first podium finish on Australian waters ever by a scheme team. Hopefully it is the first of many to come! more

 Bavaria Cup International Match Racing Champs   

Rowan Swanson, Jonathan Clough and Josh Porebski competed in the Bavaria Cup in Sydney in late November 07. This was Rowan's first regatta as skipper on the youth match racing circuit. The team performed well taking some significant scalps and ended the regatta in a credible 7th place overall, and with a whole lot more experience for regattas later in the season. more

 Matt Steven wins Yachting New Zealand CORK scholarship 

Matthew Steven was the 2007 recipient of the Yachting New Zealand CORK scholarship. He traveled to Canada in August to compete in the Youth Fest and the CORK grade 1 Laser regatta and ended up winning the Youth Fest. Well done Matt.

 Josh Junior takes Silver medal at ISAF Youth World Champs 

Josh Junior won the silver medal in the singled handed boys class at the 2007 Volvo World Youth Sailing ISAF Championships in Canada. Tim Coltman placed 6th in the Hobie Class, the Berry Sisters were 9th in the 29er class and Cushla Hume Merry placed 10th in the single handed Girls class.

The Youth scheme team of Josh Junior, Matthew Steven and Chris Jones collected the Warren "Wolfie" Williams trophy as winners of the 2007 Yachting New Zealand National Youth Match Racing Championships.

The RPNYC team of Amanda Hargreaves, Leah Moncheur, Ashleigh Williams, and Teresa Zandvliet competed at the New Zealand Women's match racing championships in Auckland.

In April each year Yachting New Zealand selects the NZL Yachting Trust Youth team. In 2007 half of the sailors in team are from Wellington. The team includes Tim Coltman (Hobie), Emma and Sarah Berry (49er girls), Josh Junior (Laser), and Cushla Hume Merry (Laser Radial).

Half the podium finishes at 2007 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team trials (excepting the RS:X boards) were Wellington sailors. In the Laser fleet Josh Junior came home first and Matthew Steven was second. In the 420 fleet Tim Coltman skippered the winning team while the Berry sisters finished third. Josh Porebski skippered the third placed boys 420 team and finished fourth overall. Cushla Hume Merry finished third overall and first girl in the Laser radial fleet. 

Regional Academy Development Project          1

During 2007 the Port Nicholson Yachting Trust worked with the New Zealand Academy of Sport and Yachting New Zealand to develop a Regional Talent Development programme for yachting. As a result the dinghy coaching elements previously delivered by the scheme are now being supported through the Wellington Yachting Talent Development Programme. 

CentrePort International Youth Match Racing Champs      1


Congratulations to Josh Junior, Matthew Steven, and Chris Jones who, sailing as RPNYC Red, finished 2nd in the 2007 Centreport International Youth Match Racing Champs. This is a fantastic result, improving from a previous best of 5th to achieve the first podium finish for the Port Nicholson Yachting Trust Youth Scheme since the scheme was founded five years ago.

Jonathan Clough, Stephen Ballinger and Josh Porebski competed in the Bavaria cup in Sydney at the Bavaria Cup with coach Amanda Hargreaves. They finished ninth in a strong fleet. Regatta site here.  

Steven Dyke HYUNDAI Youth Sail 07          1

The Port Nicholson Yachting Trust partnered Muritai Yacht Club, Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club and Worser Bay Boating Club to bring Youth Sail 07 to Wellington. Youth Sail 07 involved four events held over two weeks on various parts of Wellington Harbour. 

Hike Your Butt Laser Weekend     4 & 5 November 2006      1

Olympic Squad Laser Coach, Ian Neely, was in Wellington on the 4th and 5th of November. The weekend was very beneficial for sailors and coaches with some good ideas shared about how to develop hiking technique.   

Scheme Charter 2006          102 October 2006.  1

As part of the pre season workshop sailors outlined their expectations, responsibilities and defined what it meant to go better than B4. This information has been compiled into a scheme charter for 2006 here.   

Kick Start Clinic          124-26 September 2006.  1

The "Kick Start" Clinic for Opti, P, Starling and Lasers was held at Worser Bay. Despite strong breezes the three days of coaching got the season's on the water programme off to a good start.   

Pre season fitness testing          122 September 2006.  1

Pre season fitness testing was completed tonight at the NZAS-Central High Performance Centre. Follow up tests will be completed in December.   

Wellington Secondary Schools Match Racing champs       1

RPNYC are hosting the inaugural Wellington Secondary Schools Match Racing Champs during weeks 8, 9, and 10 of term 3 with the finals to be sailed early in term 4. View or download the champs brochure (1Mb) here.   

Sailor's pre season workshop       13 September 2006.

A pre season workshop for sailors was held on Sunday 3rd September at the NZAS-Central. The focus of the workshop was on developing goals and training priorities for the coming season. The resulting training priorities will be posted under each class area of the site shortly. Download a copy of the season programme here.  

Stagecoach cup ACT 2       127 August 2006.

ACT 2 of the Stagecoach Cup was another close fought affair. Jonathan Clough, Carl Syman and Matthew Clough got off to a blinding start only to just miss out on winning at the final hurdle.

Youth Sail 06       117-21 April 2006.

Great all round performances were achieved by 24 Wellington sailors who made the trip to Youth Sail in Christchurch. 

RPNYC Autumn Match Racing       2 April 2006.

Wellington Match took out the ISAF grade 5 RPNYC Autumn Match racing champs from Hayden Swanson's team, with the 2005 women's match racing national champ Jess Smyth in third.

Winter strength and conditioning programme      25 May 2006.

Throughout the winter a weekly strength and conditioning session is being held for sailors. The session is held on Monday evenings from 4.30 to 5.30 at the New Zealand Academy of Sport - central. All sailors welcome.

Springboks v All Black Test Lunch       1

The Loaded Hog hosted a fundraising lunch for the Scheme on 21 July from 12.00 - 4.00. Ric Solizzo, Glen Osborne and Dick Taylor entertained the crowd while Ed Rosenberg gave a great speech about the scheme to the 280 guests. Thanks to the Loaded Hog for their continued support.

Stagecoach Cup ACT 1       11-2 July 2006.

Josh Junior, Jaco Wessels and Simon McVeagh won a close fought ACT1 of the 2006 Stagecoach Cup match racing series. 

End of year one review       20 March 2006.

Sailors and their parents gathered at RPNYC to review the last 12 months of the scheme using a SWOT analysis of the scheme programme. View the aims of the evening here. View the feedback here

Laser Nationals       24-27 February 2006.

Seven youth sailors from Wellington traveled to Nelson for the Laser nationals. The stand out performance was a first in race three for Josh Junior competing in his first Laser Nationals. 

RNZYS Youth International       17-22 February 2006.

Theo McDonnell, Max Uivel and Edward Rosenberg finished 9th in the RNZYS youth international this week. This follows on from Josh Junior, Matthew Steven and Chris Jones finishing 5th and Jonathan Clough, Arran Whiteford and Carl Syman finishing 8th in last week's CentrePort champs.

2006 CentrePort IYMRC       12-16 February 2006.

The 2006 CentrePort International Youth Match Racing Champs were a close fought affair eventually being won by Logan Sutherland's team from Royal Akarana Yacht Club. 

Hardy Cup       6-9 February 2006.

Youth Scheme e6 coach Hayden Swanson competed in the Hardy Cup in Sydney with past scheme grads Matt Hibbard & Sam Melville. The team performed well in a tough fleet eventually finishing eleventh overall. 

Pre Sail Auckland Laser & 420 Clinic       25, 26 & 27 Jan 2006.

2004 Olympic 470 rep, Andrew Brown, and past YNZ Academy Laser Sailor, Robbie McMillan, spent three days working with Wellington 420 and Laser sailors in preparation for Sail Auckland and the second half of the season.

Coaching from Emirates Team NZ       21 January 2006.

Ben Ainslie and Joey Allen from Emirates Team New Zealand spent a day with the five Wellington youth match racing teams helping them to fine tune their skills in preparation for a series of international regattas in February and March. Thanks Guys!!

Inaugural match racing summer camp       20 January 2006.

The inaugural Youth Scheme summer match racing camp, involving 2 teams from Auckland, a team from Rarotonga and 2  Wellington teams, was held over four days this week. The camp was facilitated by Graham Sutherland (recently of K Challenge) and Laurie Jurie (Kiwi Match). The event was a great success and will be repeated next season.

Starling and P Class Nationals       15 January 2006.

Twenty eight sailors from Wellington sailed in either the P Class or Starling nationals this season. 26 of these sailors were involved in one or more elements of the Youth Scheme's training programme for P and Starling sailors. 

End of year P, Starling and Laser clinics    13 - 23 December 2005.

Six P Class and 16 Starling sailors spent five days in a training camp at Worser Bay as a build up to their national championships. Over the same period 11 Laser sailors also spent five days in a Laser camp at Muritai Yacht Club.

Harken Cup    6 December 2005.

A Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club team consisting of Josh Junior, Matt Steven, Chris Jones, and Edward Rosenberg competed in the Harken Cup in Sydney. They finished tenth in a very strong fleet. 

Starling Match Racing Trials    26 November 2005.

After four flights, fifty matches and a best of three final Rowan Swanson of Worser Bay Boating Club emerged as the victor in the Wellington Starling Match racing trials. 

Bavaria Cup    22 November 2005.

Theo McDonnell, Dougal MacDuff and Adam Treweek returned to Wellington today after finishing eighth in the Bavaria Cup on Sydney Harbour.

Hiking Biomechanics feedback    12 October 2005.

New Zealand Academy of Sport Central have sent sailors an analysis of their hiking styles. The reports include feedback on torque generated and a comparison of performance relative to other sailors. A sample report is available here.

Training Clinic    25-28 September 2005.

A three day clinic for 48 Opti, P, Starling, Laser and 420 sailors was held at Worser Bay Boating club this week. YNZ coaches joined regional coaches in delivering the programme aimed at getting the season coaching programme underway and at preparing sailors for the winter champs.  

ACT 2 finals day    17 September 2005.

The finals of ACT2 of the e6 selection trials was held at Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club today. Wellington Match won a close fought final from Team Extreme. 

Hiking tests    16 September 2005.

The first round of hiking tests for the season were completed this week at the New Zealand Academy of Sport Central. Analysis and feedback on hiking styles will be sent to sailors early next month. 

420 charters for season    2 September 2005.

Evans Bay Yacht & Motorboat Club have agreed to charter their 420s to sailors involved in the scheme at a very reasonable rate for the whole season. For more details click here.

Fitness evaluations    18 August 2005.

This season the New Zealand Academy of Sport Central is working with the scheme on various sport science topics. An outline of how the Academy is working with the scheme is available here.

2005-6 Season Programme launch    1 August 2005

The 2005-6 Season Programme was launched at Muritai Yacht Club and Worser Bay Boating Club this week. ACT 1 of the e6 selection trials has now been completed. Team McDonnell came out on top closely followed by Wellington Match and Team Thomas. 

Learning to Sail and Match Race an e6      11 May 2005.

Over forty sailors from eight Wellington clubs are learning to sail and match race e6s at various times this season.  

End of 2004-5 season review   1 May 2005.
