08-09 Wellington Under 21 and
Women's Match Racing squads announced
|
The Port Nicholson Yachting Trust
is proud to announce the selection of the Wellington Under 21
Match Racing Squad and the Wellington Women's Match Racing
Squad. Trust chairman Murray Bridge says "we are pleased to be
expanding our support of match racing in Wellington with the
establishment of these two new squads. From May 08 to April 09
we will provide coaching and logistical support to the squads so
that they can achieve their best on the Trans Tasman circuit. We
wish the sailors the best of luck."

Wellington International Youth Match Racing Champs

Three
youth scheme teams competed in the CentrePort champs in
Wellington in early March. The wind played tricks with the
regatta meaning only one round robin could be completed. All
scheme teams sailed very well indicating that the strength of
youth match racing in the Wellington region is on the improve. more

Junior, Matthew Steven and Chris Jones
finished second.
Rowan Swanson, Jonathan
Clough and Matthew Clough finished seventh.
Chris Staub, Tom
Connal and James Hakes finished eighth.

Cup

Josh
Junior, Matthew Steven and Chris Jones
competed in the Hardy Cup Under 25 ISAF grade 3 match racing
champs in mid February 08. The team sailed outstandingly to finish
in fifth place, and very near to making the semis. A complicated
tie break was needed to split them from two other teams for the
3rd and 4th spots in the final. more |

Bank International Match Racing Champs

Staub, Simon McVeagh and James Hakes
competed in the National Bank International Youth Match Racing
Champs in Auckland in late January 08 This young and new
combination improved throughout the regatta finishing 8th in a
very competitive fleet. more |

Harken
Cup International Match Racing Champs

Josh
Junior, Matthew Steven, Adam Middleton and Chris
Jones competed in the Harken Cup in Sydney in mid December
07. The team sailed very well to finish in third place in a very
high caliber fleet. This was the first podium finish on
Australian waters ever by a scheme team. Hopefully it is the
first of many to come! more |

Bavaria
Cup International Match Racing Champs

Rowan
Swanson, Jonathan Clough and Josh Porebski
competed in the Bavaria Cup in Sydney in late November 07. This was
Rowan's first regatta as skipper on the youth match racing
circuit. The team performed well taking some significant scalps
and ended the regatta in a credible 7th place overall, and with
a whole lot more experience for regattas later in the season. more |

Matt
Steven wins Yachting New Zealand CORK scholarship

Matthew
Steven was the 2007 recipient of the Yachting New Zealand
CORK scholarship. He traveled to Canada in August to compete in
the Youth Fest and the CORK grade 1 Laser regatta and ended up
winning the Youth Fest. Well done Matt. |

Josh
Junior takes Silver medal at ISAF Youth World Champs

Josh
Junior won the silver medal in the singled handed boys class
at the 2007 Volvo World Youth Sailing ISAF Championships in
Canada. Tim Coltman placed 6th in the Hobie Class, the Berry
Sisters were 9th in the 29er class and Cushla Hume Merry
placed 10th in the single handed Girls class. |

In
April each year Yachting New Zealand selects the NZL Yachting
Trust Youth team. In 2007 half of the sailors in team are from
Wellington. The team includes Tim Coltman (Hobie), Emma and Sarah Berry
(49er girls), Josh Junior (Laser), and Cushla Hume
Merry (Laser Radial). |

Half
the podium finishes at 2007 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team trials
(excepting the RS:X boards) were Wellington sailors. In the
Laser fleet Josh
Junior came home first and Matthew Steven was
second. In the 420 fleet Tim Coltman skippered the
winning team while the Berry sisters finished third. Josh Porebski
skippered the third placed boys 420 team and finished fourth
overall. Cushla Hume Merry finished third overall and
first girl in the Laser radial fleet. |

Regional
Academy Development Project

During
2007 the
Port Nicholson Yachting Trust worked with the New
Zealand Academy of Sport and Yachting New Zealand to develop a
Regional Talent Development programme for yachting. As a
result the dinghy coaching elements previously
delivered by the scheme are now being supported through the Wellington
Yachting Talent Development Programme. |

International Youth Match Racing Champs

Congratulations
to Josh Junior, Matthew Steven,
and Chris Jones who, sailing as RPNYC Red,
finished 2nd in the 2007 Centreport International Youth Match Racing
Champs. This is a fantastic result, improving from a previous
best of 5th to achieve the first podium finish for the Port
Nicholson Yachting Trust Youth Scheme since the scheme was
founded five years ago.

bring Youth Sail 07 to Wellington. Youth Sail 07 involved four events held over two weeks on various parts of
Wellington Harbour. |

Squad Laser Coach, Ian Neely, was in Wellington on the 4th
and 5th of November. The weekend was very beneficial for sailors
and coaches with some good ideas shared about how to develop

September at the NZAS-Central. The focus of the workshop was on
developing goals and training priorities for the coming season.

July from 12.00 - 4.00. Ric Solizzo, Glen Osborne and Dick
Taylor entertained the crowd while Ed Rosenberg gave a great speech

Inaugural
match racing summer camp

The
inaugural Youth Scheme summer match racing camp, involving 2
teams from Auckland, a team from Rarotonga and 2
Wellington teams, was held over four days this week. The camp
was facilitated by Graham Sutherland (recently
of K Challenge) and Laurie
Jurie (Kiwi Match).
The event was a great success and will be repeated next season. |

Starling nationals this season. 26 of these sailors were
involved in one or more elements of the Youth Scheme's training
programme for P and Starling sailors. |
