Have

The
Port Nicholson Yachting Trust has provided the opportunity for
Wellington year 7 and 8 School Students to “Go Match Racing”
on Wellington Harbour. The programme was a success with schools
filling up all eight sessions during December.

2009
Musto Youth Match Racing Championships
|
The
Wellington trio of Josh Junior Matt Steven and Chris Jones
teamed up for the Musto Youth Match Racing Champs held at the
Cruising Yacht Club of Australia. The team sailed extremely well
to win all but one race over the four days. This was the first
win for a Wellington team on Australian soil and it shows how
far the Youth Match Racing has developed in Wellington from
three years ago when no team had ever made a podium.

Harken Youth Match Racing Championships
|
The
Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club was represented in the 2009
Harken Match Racing Champs at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club
in Sydney. The team of Matt Steven, Josh Junior Matt Clough and
Chris Jones went into the regatta with high expectations as they
had placed third in the previous two Harken regattas. However
third time was not lucky as the team placed third for the third
consecutive year.

2009
NZ Match Racing National Championships
|
The
Youth Scheme again recruited some older and heavier sailors to
join Josh Junior and Matt Steven for this year’s New Zealand
Match Racing Nationals. The line up was tough with names such as
Chris Dickson and Laurie Jury. However the team from Wellington
started off well beating both of these favorites in the first
round robin. Unfortunately some losses to lower ranked teams
meant the team had to settle for fifth place.

a luncheon. Brad enthralled the local youth sailors from around
the Wellington region by telling them what it’s like to sail
in an America’s Cup, how to win it and what it takes to get to
the elite level of the sport.
